It is said that Parvati, the spouse of Shiva, once performed penance beside the Vegavathi river when she was sitting beneath the old mango tree that is located on the temple grounds. Shiva sent her through the blaze of hell as a test of her loyalty to him. The Hindu goddess Parvati pleaded for assistance from her brother, Vishnu.
He removed the Moon from Shiva’s head so that he might rescue Parvati by exposing her to the Moon’s rays, which caused both the tree and Parvati to become less hot. Once again, Shiva interrupted Parvati’s fasting by sending the river Ganga (also spelled Ganges). Parvati sent prayers to Ganga and tried to persuade her that because they were sisters, Ganga should refrain from hurting Parvati.
