The name “Wankaner” refers to a bend in the river and provides some context for the area. As a result of its proximity to the Machchhu River, the city was given that name. The Wankaner were the first royal dynasty of Gujarat to let visitors inside their palaces. On a hill about 2.5 kilometers from the main palace complex lies the Royal Oasis (MotiVadi), a place of refuge from the sweltering heat in the past. Located on the Macchu River, the Royal Oasis was founded in the 1970s by Maharana Digvijay Sinh as the first historic hotel in Gujarat.
The Royal Oasis was constructed in the 1920s, and its large rooms and mirror-lined baths are examples of the then-popular art deco architecture. It is the only art deco indoor pool in existence, and it has been totally restored. The three-story vaav, or step well, constructed in the 20th century with intricate stonework and a marble sculpture fountain is the property’s most distinctive feature.

History Of Wankaner Palace:
Wankaner’s royal line is the most senior branch of the Rajput Jhala dynasty, who once held power in neighbouring Halvad. Dhrangadhra-Halvad remained in the hands of the junior branch while the senior branch settled in Wadhwan and Wankaner. When Maharana Chandrasinghji of Halvad’s oldest son, Kumar Shri Prithirajji, died as a captive in Ahmadabad during his father’s lifetime, the two lines were permanently severed.
He had three sons, the oldest of whom was supposed to take over as heir. In contrast, Askaranji, their paternal uncle, took power from their ageing father. The three nephews, fearing for their life, ran away to Bhadli to be with their maternal cousins. The two younger boys, Rajoji and Sartanji, made it to maturity and later joined the Jam Sahib’s army in Nawanagar.
Their journey to reclaim their inheritance began when they proved their worth and gained his backing. This was only partly successful, since they were only able to seize possession of Wadhwan, a customary fief of the Halvad Heir Apparent, and not Halvad as a whole. The youngest of the brothers, Sartanji, conquered the lawless Babrias and Maiyas and consolidated his power in Wankaner.
