History Of Toorji Step Well Jodhpur

In the Indian state of Rajasthan, the city of Jodhpur is home to a historical landmark known as Toorj’s Step Well, which is also referred to as Toorji Ka Jhalra. Step wells are a well-known architectural feature in Rajasthan, but each and every well has its own special character.

This Step Well was established in the 1740s, and it was constructed by the consort of Maharaja Abhay Singh, who was known as the Queen. There is no charge to access the Step well, and visitors are not required to adhere to any particular visitation hours. Because it is open around the clock, Toorji Ka Jhalra is accessible to everyone who want to go there and take in its stunning scenery.

About The Toojri Step Well Jodhpur

This beautiful stepwell, known as Toorji ka Jhalra, was built in 1740 by Jodhpur’s ruler Maharaja Abhay Singh Ji’s wife Maharani Tanwar Ji. To the people of Jodhpur, she was better known as Toorji Ji.The royal families’ female members built baolis, or step-wells, as a part of a centuries-old custom. Toorji’s stepwell was another continuation of that tradition, and it was part of the city’s water harvesting system.

Collecting water from such bodies of water had always become one of the major daily tasks for women in those days. They felt a connection to one another when they gathered in these kinds of spots to discuss mundane matters. It still requires some attention to increase its importance for tourists, as most common visitors bypass this location in favor of the stunning Royal Palace(Mehrangarh Fort), which is only 3 km away.

Stepwell’s artistry is delightful, displaying engineering perfection. Waterspouts in the shape of a cow and a lion were carved to provide an outlet for the water. The stairs leading to the water level are exquisitely designed, with statues of Gods and Goddesses interspersed.

Viewing galleries, also known as Jharokhas, are built around the steps where lamps were once kept to illuminate the area at night. Locals are now using these as a platform to dive deep into the water.

While the Jhalra was being cleaned and renovated recently after over 200 years underwater, priceless sculptures of dancing elephants were found. These fabulous pieces of art are elegantly sculpted from the popular Red Ghatu or Lal Ghatu stone. The Persian Wheels technology was implemented to increase the water level. A pair of oxen rotated those wheels from the top platform, and water rose to two various levels.
