There is a legend behind the name Kanipakam. Once upon a time, there were three brothers who were mute, deaf and blind. After noticing that the water in their agricultural well was drying up, they started to dig and said that if they dug a little more, they would get water, but they hit a hard rock and within seconds, blood started flowing in the well.

Little by little the well fills up. When the three brothers noticed what had happened, they saw an idol of Lord Ganesha in the well. When they worshipped that idol, they lost their otherness and became ordinary people. The villagers came to know about it and started worshipping the idol. There is an ancient story that the water from the coconuts struck by the devotees spread over an area of ​​one and a quarter acres and the place got its Tamil name “Kaniparakam”, which became “Kanipakam”.
