The Garbharakshambigai Temple is a Shiva-dedicated Hindu temple that can be found in Thirukarukavoor, which is located in the state of Tamil Nadu in India.
The temple can be found on the southern bank of the Vettar River and is situated 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) to the east of Papanasam, 20 kilometres (12 miles) to the south-east of Kumbakonam, 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) to the north of Saliyamangalam, 20 kilometres (12 miles) to the north-east of Thanjavur.
The Papanasam Railway Station is the closest station to Thirukarukavoor; it is about five kilometres distant from the town. The temple is thought to have been created during the Cholas period, which occurred in the seventh century.
It was designed and built in the Dravidian style of architecture. Mullaivananathar is another name for Shiva, and Garbharakshambigai is another name for Shiva’s consort Parvathi.

There are a total of 31 inscriptions inside the temple, all of which date back to the Chola era and were penned during the reigns of Koperi Varman, Rajaraja I, Rajendra Chola I, and Kulothunga Chola. The rulers’ names and the dates that they granted the temple are recorded on the inscriptions. Inscriptions can be seen on the walls of the halls, the sanctum, and the temple itself.
These inscriptions can be found in South Indian Inscriptions, Volume III, Part III, at the numbers 100, 102, and 110, respectively. The inscription from the 21st year of Parantaka I indicates that a person named Vilayanattevan donated 1.5 Veli of land (about 6 acres of land) to the temple in order to maintain its ghee lamps.

At some point in the distant past, two sages named Gowthama and Gargeya took penance at this location called ‘MULLAIVANAM’ ie (Jasmine Forest). Nidhruva and Vedikai were a married couple who helped the wise people who lived in the ashram where they were staying. Because the couple did not have any children, they were able to convey this information to wise people.
The wise ones recommended to the couple that they worship Sri Garbarakshambigai. The couple carried out those actions with unwavering commitment, and as a result, they saw an answer to their prayers. The baby Vedikai was conceived.
She was in a state of faintness due to the pressure of pregnancy during the latter stages of her pregnancy, which occurred when her husband Nidhruva was away from home. At this same time, a wise man by the name of Sri. Urdhuvapada arrived at her home and sought alms. She did not answer that wise person’s plea because she was in an unconscious state at the time.
The wise man was infuriated by her apparent apathy, and he cursed her despite not knowing the precise reason for her silence. The curse caused her unborn child to dissolve and fall to the ground. Vedikai, who was shaken to the core, pleaded desperately to the Goddess.
The Goddess manifested herself in front of her, safeguarded the foetus, and kept it in a holy vessel until it matured into a male kid before presenting the child to the dedicated couple. The parents decided to give their son the name “Naidhuruvan.”
