History Sree Chitra Art Gallery Thiruvananthapuram

Many artistic movements, including Mughal, Rajput, Bengali, Rajastani, and Tanjore, are represented in the gallery’s displays.  In addition, there are rare collections of prehistoric Indian mural paintings and works from China, Japan, and Bali. Manuscripts of archival significance are also of interest, as are miniatures from all over the world, reproductions of murals from Ajanta, Bagh, Sigiriya, and Sittannavasal, and so on. Ancient Tanjore miniature paintings dating back 400 years can be found here.

There are 15 Roerich originals[7] and 43 Raja Ravi Varma originals on display at the gallery. In addition to his paintings, the exhibition also features some of Ravi Varma’s rare pencil sketches. Formerly housed at Chithralaya in Kilimanoor, the paintings of Ravi Varma were permanently loaned to the art gallery by the Kilimanoor Palace in 1941.

The palace originally donated 70 paintings by Ravi Varma to the art gallery, but because to space limitations, not all of them could be displayed. In 2005, the government of Kerala commenced the task of restoring Ravi Varma paintings. Artwork by Ravi Varma, including the masterwork “Shakuntala and Damayanti Talking to a Swan,” is on display. There was a fire in the gallery in 2010 that necessitated its closure for refurbishment.
