It is not necessary to provide an introduction to the name Sabarmati Ashram for Indians of any age. It is also referred to as the Gandhi Ashram, and its location is on the banks of the Sabarmati River, approximately 6 kilometres distant from the centre of Ahmedabad. The ashram has the distinction of being the home of Mahatma Gandhi between the years of 1917 and 1930. It was also a pivotal location in the fight for Indian independence. Also, it was used as a base for many of his operations, including the famous Dandi March that took place in 1930. At the present time, the ashram complex is home to a number of different establishments and structures, one of which is a museum. In this museum, many of Gandhiji’s letters and personal possessions are on exhibit. It goes without saying that this is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Ahmedabad.

History Of The Ashram

In 1915, he established his very first ashram in a cottage in the Kochrab neighbourhood. One of his close lawyer friends had generously given it to him as a gift. He desired to participate in pursuits like animal husbandry, farming, and khadi, but the Kochrab Ashram was not large enough to accommodate these kinds of activity. As a result, the ashram was moved in 1917 to a piece of open land that comprised 36 acres and was situated on the banks of the Sabarmati River. After this, it became known as the Sabarmati Ashram. In addition to those names, it was also referred to as the Satyagraha Ashram, the Harijan Ashram, and the Gandhi Ashram.

According to the annals of history, Gandhiji resided in this ashram from the years 1917 through 1930. During that time, he also reportedly established a school within the complex to teach people literacy, agriculture, and manual labour. In addition to this, he and seventy-eight of his colleagues started the Dandi march from this location in 1930 in order to defend the Salt Law that had been imposed by the British. Following the outbreak of a widespread civil disobedience movement, the British government took control of the ashram. In 1933, in order to show his support for those fighting for India’s independence, he closed the ashram and made a solemn vow not to go back there until the country was free. In spite of the fact that India gained its independence in 1947, Gandhiji was not able to go back to the ashram since he was killed less than half a year later.
