Patna, Bihar, India is home to the Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan, which is also known as the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park or the Patna Zoo. You can find it just off Bailey Road. In 1973, the public was given access to the park’s zoo for the first time. In 1969, the park first opened its doors to the public as a botanical garden. The garden was established on about 34 acres (14 ha) of land that was donated from the Governor House complex by Sri Nityanand Kanungo, who served as Governor of Bihar at the time. In 1972, Public Works contributed an additional 58.2 acres (23.6 ha) to this, and the Revenue Department assisted in the expansion of the park by transferring 60.75 acres (24.58 ha) to the Forest Department.

The Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park in Patna was first formed as a Botanical Garden on a portion of 34.00 acres of land that was a part of the Governor’s campus in accordance with a letter sent by the State of Bihar’s Forest Department on April 13, 1970, and with the number 1781V.
The property on which the garden now stands was donated to the state’s forest department by His Excellency Shri Nityanand Kanoongo, who served as Governor of Bihar at the time. The Divisional Forest Officer of the Gaya Forest Division was given the responsibility of serving as the Garden’s officer-in-charge.
It was renamed the Biological Park in 1972 by the Department of Forests of the Government of Bihar, and it came under the administrative jurisdiction of the Working Plan Officer of the Magadh Circle in Patna at that time. In later years, property belonging to the Revenue Department, which was next to the existing Biological Park, and land belonging to the Public Works Department, which was also adjacent to the park, were both given to the Forest Department.
Timings And Geography of Patna Zoo
- The Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park is open from March to October with hours ranging from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
- From November to February, the hours are from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Therefore, the total size of the Biological Park as it exists now is around 153 acres. The area that the State Government bought from the Public Works Department and the Revenue Department was subsequently designated as a Protected Forest by the State Government. Under the provisions of the Bihar Essential Services Maintenance Act, the state government has designated the operation of parks and zoos as an “Essential Service.” 1980 saw the park undergo a rebranding, being known now as Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park.
