The Department of Education of the Government of West Bengal created a zoo on August 14, 1958, in the Birch Hill neighborhood of Darjeeling to study and preserve the Himalayan species. The zoo is located in Darjeeling. Dilip Kumar Dey was the company’s first Director and also its founder.

In 1960, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev sent a pair of Siberian (Ussuri) tigers to the Government of India as a gift.
