King Singham of Deogiri paid a visit to the Mahabaleshwar, and as a result, the Mahabaleshwar gained historical significance. At the bank of the Krishna River, King Singham built a shrine and a water tank. A Brahmin dynasty ruled the Mahabaleshwar in 1350.

In the middle of the 16th century, the Maratha overthrew the Brahmin dynasty and went on to rule over Javli and Mahabaleshwar. It was during this time that the original Mahabaleshwar temple was built.

The current Mahabaleshwar was created later, around 1839–20. According to historical accounts, it was formerly known as Malcolm Peth but is now called Mahabaleshwar.
