The Origins of Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary

The town of Vedanthangal, often known as “the hamlet of the hunters,” got its name due of its reputation as a fantastic hunting area. Throughout the eighteenth century, local lords and monarchs frequented the area for the hunting of native and migratory birds. Because of the direct correlation between bird populations and agricultural output, local villagers have long held the view that safeguarding birds is a moral and economic imperative. Bird poop in the water was recognised as a kind of organic fertiliser.

Because of this, they filed a complaint with the collector of Chengalpet Lionel Palace and requested that the colonial administration designate the area as a wildlife preserve. Thanks to their efforts, the collector issued them a “cowl,” designating the area as a no-hunting zone due to the abundance of birdlife. A few years later, in 1962, Vedanthangal was officially designated as a reserve forest under the Madras Forest Act.
