In the Chaturdash Devata temple, the 15th-day following Ambubachi is reserved for the Kharchi Puja. After the ‘Chantai’ (chief priest) and his priests have transported the 14 deities to a river, the rites will commence with a washing ceremony in the sacred water.
After being decked with flowers and having vermilion applied to their foreheads, the deities are transported back to the temple. Shiva, Durga, Vishnu, Lakshmi, Vani or Saraswati, Kumar or Kartikeya, Ganapa or Ganesha, Brahma, Prithivi, Abdhi or Samudra, Ganga, Sikhi or Agni, Kamadeva, and Himadri are among the 14 deities. In an interview with EastMojo, the head priest of the Chaturdash Deveta temple explained that the festival of Kharchi Puja has been performed annually since it was first instituted in 1760.
