The Rockfort, also known as Malai Kottai (a direct translation), is a large rocky hill that contains a fort erected on it by the Vijayanagar Empire. The British eventually strengthened the fort. Geologists estimate that these rocky mountains have been there for three and a half billion years.

Manika Vinayaga Temple is located at the base of the rock fort, and the Ucchi Pillayar Temple is located atop the rocky hill, both of which are devoted to the Hindu god Ganesha (Ucchi-in the top). The Thayumanavar Temple may be found around 100 feet above the surrounding landscape. The Thayumanavar temple is the biggest of the three, and it has a sannidhi for Amman as well as a moola var Thayumanavar that takes the shape of a lingam.

There is a story that tells of a lady named Rathnavathi who was in the latter stages of her pregnancy when she went into labor. As she was in the process of giving birth, she called her mother and asked her to come help. Because of the severe flooding caused by the Cauvery river, her mother was unable to arrive on time. When the time approached for Rathnavathi to give birth, she prayed to Lord Shiva.

After ensuring Rathnavathi’s birth went well, Shiva then transformed himself into Rathnavathi’s mother and disappeared. Rathnavathi’s mother arrived later, and by the time she did, both daughter and mother had realized that it was Lord Shiva disguised as the mother who had come to assist Rathnavathi in giving birth. As a result, the deity Shiva inside this temple became known as Thayumanaswamy.

Devotees continue to pray to Thayumanaswamy for the safe delivery of their daughters and present a whole stalk of green bananas as an offering to the god after the birth of their child has been successfully completed. This temple is considered to be one of the oldest temples dedicated to Shiva and is regarded as one of the most significant of the 274 streams dedicated to Shiva.
