Suchindram, in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, India, is home to the Thanumalayan Temple, also known as the Sthanumalayan Temple. Although it is technically in Tamil Nadu (after the merger of Travancore’s Kanyakumari District with Tamil Nadu), this temple is one of the 108 shiva temples treasured by the Kerala Hindu tradition.

With a name that alludes to the Trimurtis—”Stanu” meaning Siva, “Mal” meaning Vishnu, and “Ayan” meaning Brahm the Thanumalayan Temple is significant to both the Shaivaite and Vaishnavite schools of Hinduism. Each of the two gopurams, or gateway towers, at the temple’s main entrance stands at about 60 feet tall.

The eastern tower is the highest on 11 floors and 44 meters in height (144 ft). There are several shrines in the temple, but the ones dedicated to Sthanumalayan and Hanumar stand out the most. There are six rituals performed at the temple every day between 5:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., and several festivals are celebrated throughout the year, the most important of which occurs during the month of Margazhi. The current brick building dates back to the 9th century and was constructed by the Chola dynasty.

It was later expanded by Thirumalai Nayak and the Travancore Maharajas. The Dharmapuram Aadhenam is responsible for the upkeep and management of the temple. Both the virtuous Anasuya and the sinful Indra have ties to the temple, with the former having their sins absolved by offerings to the temple’s chief god. The Government of Tamil Nadu’s Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department is responsible for the temple’s upkeep and administration. Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma, the Hindu trinity, performed a heavenly deed to immortalize her name.

Being Brahmin itinerants, they sought the sage’s retreat. Anasuya gave them her whole attention. In order to accept her hospitality, the Brahmins proposed a condition: she must appear before them completely naked. She used her chastity to shrink the adults down to toddler size, then fed them her breast milk. The women of the Trinity asked Atri to return to the hermitage and restore their husbands to their natural shape, so he did just that. After being asked, Anasuya quickly returned the children to their normal selves. Because of their unwavering love, the Holy Trinity bestowed upon them their blessing.
