The present site of Shri Jagannath Temple was formerly a lush deciduous forest that lost leaves each year. Spiritual explorers during those times frequently visit this location to seek tranquility and escape from the rush and bustle of the city’s lifestyle. One day, Shri Hanuman Das Ji made a visit to this location and he learned that it is a perfect site to stop and remain at for a few days. Shri Hanuman Das Ji, a great devotee of Ram Bhakt Maruti, chose to erect an idol and give prayers to date.
A vast inflow of people from the adjacent districts went to this spot which finally opened the way for establishing a new temple. His successor, Sadhu Sarangdasji, was also devoted to Lord Jagannath. One day, he and his local companions decided to visit the famed Jagannath Temple in Odisha.
When he was resting at the precincts of the temple, he witnessed some vivid pictures of Lord Jagannath telling him to hurry back to Ahmedabad and erect idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Baldevji, and Lady Subhadra. Eventually, the Maruti temple was well known by the name Shri Jagannath Mandir. Shri Jagannath Temple contains a cow shed also.

Folklore has it that before the Lord was venerated as Jagannath, also known as the Lord of the Universe, he was revered as “Purushottama,” which means “the one who is the creator, the defender, and the destroyer of the universe.”
It is often believed that the current construction of the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri was erected in the 12th century AD by King Ananta Varman Chodaganga Deva, who was also known as the founder of the Ganga Dynasty. Despite this, the temple wasn’t finished being constructed until 1230 AD, under the reign of Anangbheema Deva III. He was also the one who put the gods in the shrine.
Shri Jagannath Temple Entry Fee And Timings
The Shri Jagannath Temple does not charge an entrance fee. It is possible to receive the Darshan of Lord Jagannath at any time of day, from the wee hours of the morning to the wee hours of the night. But, during special events, the rule is relaxed.
At about 5:30 in the morning, the temple opens its gates to the general public. Darshan of the Lord, however, is restricted until after the ‘Mangal Arati. From the time the Bhitar Kaatha (Jagamohana/Prayer Hall) opens at midnight until the end of another ritual called “Besha,” which lasts until 7:30 or 8 in the morning, devotees have access to this darshan. Gopal Ballava Puja is then performed, when the darshan of the Lord is unavailable.
