History Of Nandankanan Zoological Park

The zoo was supposed to be located near Ghatikia, which is in close proximity to the Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves. On the other hand, it was thought that this may cause issues with water in the future. A significant amount of water is required in a zoo for the care of the animals, the maintenance of the animal housing, and a variety of other tasks. While Chandaka was the Range Officer, he indicated that the most desirable place would be the Jujhagarh forest block, which is located on Kanjia lake and is close to the Barang Railway station.

At that time, the Chief Conservator of Forests, the Divisional Forest Officer of Puri, the Range Officer of Chandaka, and D.P. Ghosh, a Forest Ranger, all visited the location and were taken aback by its breathtaking natural scenery. Kanjia lake exhibited a gorgeous scene with its large breadth of over 125 acres, the low and sloping hills of Jujhagarh and Krushnanagar D.P.F.S., and rich green vegetation on both sides of the lake. The only way to get to the zoo from Bhubaneswar was to go 38 kilometers to Chandaka, hence the best place to locate it would have been the Jujhagarh Forest Block. This would have been ideal for the location of the zoo.
