The Nageshwar Temple, or Nageshvara Temple as it is often called, is located on the coast of Saurashtra in the Indian state of Gujarat. The Nageshvara temple’s history reveals two possible origins for this Jyotirlinga. Both myths centre around the mystical nature of this structure. The earliest account of the demons Daruka and Daruki is in the Shiva Purana and is roughly a century old.
Dwarka was formerly known as Darukavana, after the Asura couple from whom it took its current name. Daruki, Daruka’s wife, was a devoted follower of Parvati. Daruka, however, was a vicious demon who took pleasure in causing trouble for others.
One day, a devotee of Lord Shiva by the name of Supriya was among the people he imprisoned. Daruka squandered the favours bestowed upon him and persisted in harassing the locals. Supriya encouraged everyone to sing the mantra “Om Namaha Shivaye” while they were held captive.
Supriya reassured the townsfolk that they would be safe under the protection of this mantra. As soon as Daruka found out, he went out of his mind with rage and attempted to eliminate the threat. That’s when the Linga, the physical manifestation of Lord Shiva, showed up on Earth. Thanks to a gift from Parvati, Shiva was unable to kill the demon. Therefore, he promised Supriya and everyone else that the Jyotirlinga would serve as a shield.

This event, known as Mahashivaratri, takes place sometime between the end of February and the beginning of March.
