Construction of Konark Sun Temple

Two types of Gathas are in use in Imaka Orissa for the construction of Konark. One is the story of Langula Narasimhadevumanthri Shivaisantra- Ramachandi Paramannam. This story is in Madala Panchangam. The second one is very interesting. 1200 sculptors built this temple in 16 years, one of the main sculptors left his pregnant wife at home and went to Konark for the construction of this temple. After a few days, a boy was born to Ashilpi. One day, when the boy was playing with the boys, the boys made fun of him saying that he was a fatherless child. With that he became very ashamed and angrily went to his mother and forced her to tell him who his father was. Saying that his father was working in the construction of a temple in Konark, the mother sent her son away with similar sheaths of plums. The boy reached Konark in search of his father. At that time 1200 sculptors could not complete the construction of the temple. All the sculptors were disheartened and afraid of the harshness of the king. By the time everyone had gone to bed, the sculptor boy himself finished tying the flag of the temple. At dawn, the sculptors were amazed to see the perfect temple. But they were ordered by Akurrava’s father that the king would scold all those who were not able to do so. “Boroloho bodeire dai ki eka puoro dai”. That is, 1200 sculptors are worthless or one son is worthless.” Then the father was very distressed and could not answer anything, so he took his son to Amandira peak and let him down from there.
