Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III of the Gaekwad dynasty of the Marathas commissioned the construction of the Kirti Temple to honor the memories of his forefathers. Kirti Mandir’s shikhara has bronze representations of the sun, moon, and earth superimposed on an uncut map of India.

It was constructed in 1936 for Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III’s Diamond Jubilee festivities. Five murals on the temple walls by artist Nandalal Bose depict scenes from the Mahabharata conflict and other mythological and historical events from India. Formerly home to the Gaekwad or Gaikwad kings, Vadodara is better known now as the city of Baroda. There were many other names for it in the past.

As there were so many banyan trees along the banks of the Vishwamitri River, the city was variously known as Chandravati, Viravati, and Vadpatra. Vadodara is home to the temple complex of Kirti Mandir. Sayajirao Maharajah erected this cluster of temples in the vicinity of the city’s Vishwamitra Bridge. This Kirti Temple, dedicated to Lord Mahadev, is said to have been erected by Sayajirao Maharaja in honor of the royal Gaekwad family’s ancestors who had passed away.

As a result of its transformation, it is now one of the city’s most popular tourist destinations. The impressive stone structure has the form of the letter “E,” complete with balconies, terraces, domes, and a central shikhara that soars to a height of around 35 meters. The Kirti Mandir’s interiors are marble treated and wonderfully ornamented with finely carved murals. The center hall features many large, well-preserved murals by the celebrated Bengali artist Nandalal Bose, including scenes from the Gangavataran, the Life of Meera, the Battle of the Mahabharat, and Natir Poojan.

The public may also examine statues and priceless images of notable Gaekwad family members. Maratha control in Baroda entered its heyday with Sayajirao Maharaja, according to historical accounts. He assumed power in 1875. With a budget of only Rs. 50,000, the Kirti Mandir of Baroda was able to conserve, room by room, sculptures and photos of the royal family. This beautiful building’s inside is marble-finished, and it features paintings by the renowned Bengali artist Nandalal Bose depicting the Gangavataran, the battle of the Mahabharat, the life of Meera, and the Natir Pooja.
