Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III of the Gaekwad dynasty of the Marathas commissioned the construction of the Kirti Temple to honor the memories of his forefathers. Kirti Mandir’s shikhara has bronze representations of the sun, moon, and earth superimposed on an uncut map of India.
It was constructed in 1936 for Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III’s Diamond Jubilee festivities. Five murals on the temple walls by artist Nandalal Bose depict scenes from the Mahabharata conflict and other mythological and historical events from India. The center hall features many large, well-preserved murals by the celebrated Bengali artist Nandalal Bose, including scenes from the Gangavataran, the Life of Meera, the Battle of the Mahabharat, and Natir Poojan.

He assumed power in 1875. With a budget of only Rs. 50,000, the Kirti Mandir of Baroda was able to conserve, room by room, sculptures and photos of the royal family.
