Tenkasi, a City in the Tirunelveli district of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is home to the Kasi Viswanathar Temple, which is devoted to the Hindu deity Shiva. The temple, which was erected in the Dravidian style, was likely commissioned by Pandyan monarch Parakkirama Pandian in the 13th century and expanded upon by the Madurai Nayaks in the following centuries. Early in the 13th century C.E., Tenkasi was founded. Inscriptions at the temple, dating back to the reign of Vira Pandiya in 1384, describe the king’s generosity in providing homes for Brahmanas in exchange for their recitation of the Vedas and Puranas. Parakkirama Pandian, a Pandya monarch, governed the area around modern-day Tenkasi and the rest of the southern Madurai region from 1428 until 1460. Several sources provide different years for Parakkirama Pandya’s reign, with the inscription on the temple giving the year 1309.
In the 16th century, Tenkasi was included in the Madurai area. As Madurai gained its independence from the Vijayanagar Empire under the Nayaks in 1559, the temple began receiving donations from the dynasty’s kings. Prior to the beginning of construction of the current temple tower in 1967, the temple had a flat tower. Construction on the current temple tower, which stands at 180 feet, began in 1990 and was completed in 1990.

The Saivite faith is upheld through the temple’s daily rituals. When it comes to the daily and annual rituals (pooja), the temple priests are the ones in charge. Kalasanthi takes place at 8:30 a.m., Uchikalam at 11:30 a.m., Sayarakshai at 5:30 p.m., and Aravanai Pooja at 8:00 p.m. Weekly, monthly, and biweekly rituals are carried out there.
