The Stambheshwar Mahadev temple is a religious shrine that has been around for 150 years. It is one of the oldest temples in India that is devoted to Lord Shiva. In the district of Jambusar in Gujarat, it may be found in a tiny community known as Kavi Kaboi.

The temple may be found in the region where the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Cambay meet, and it is just a few meters off the coast. In spite of the fact that the architecture is little to write home about, this is one of the most significant religious sites in India because of its odd position.

This temple is mentioned in the Skanda Purana, one of the 18 Hindu scriptures known as Puranas. Legend has it that Kartikeya, Lord Shiva’s son, led the Devas (Gods) in its construction. According to folklore, he slew the demon Tarakasur. The plot goes like this: Tarakasur, although a demon, was a committed follower of Shiva. He desired to gain strength and might, so he did penances, or ‘tapasya,’ in front of Lord Brahma. Tarakasur was smart enough to petition Lord Brahma for a benediction that would protect him from death when the time came to make his request.

He begged Tarakasur for another miracle, despite the fact that he knew death was on the corner. His last request was to be killed by Lord Shiva’s son, who was just six years old at the time. He prayed to Lord Brahma, and Brahma obliged.

Tarakasur, convinced of his newfound immortality, launched a reign of terror against the Gods and slaughtered hundreds of them. Lord Shiva conceived his son Kartikeya from his third eye to put a stop to the anarchy. Kartikeya killed Tarakasur with a spear to the chest when he was just six years old.

Kartikeya was upset by his own action when all the other gods and deities were rejoicing over Tarakasur’s death. As Tarakasur was a Lord Shiva devotee, he felt guilty over murdering him and sought penance. But, as consolation, Lord Vishnu assured him that, as he had not killed an innocent person, his action was not a wicked conduct but rather an act of heroism.

Lord Vishnu told Kartikeya to build Shiv Lingas and worship them with all his heart to help him get over the remorse he felt for what he had done. Kartikeya set up these Shiv Lingas all throughout India. As an example, consider the temple of Stambheshwar. Kartikeya’s guilt was removed in this manner. If you want to observe the temple disappear and then resurface at different times of day, you’ll need to consult the tide charts. The villagers usually go to the temple early in the morning, before the tide comes in.

Where Did The Temple Disappear?

A little distance from the coast of Gujarat is where you’ll find the Stambheshwar temple. The temple disappears under the waves at high tide and reemerges when the tide goes down. The sea level fluctuates twice daily, causing the temple to be submerged at each of these times. The water starts to withdraw, revealing the four-foot-tall Shiva Lingam. Just the very tip of the sanctum sanctorum, known as the Garbha Griha, is visible above the sea.
