The origins of the Sri Ulagalanda Perumal Temple

One of the Divya desams in Kanchipuram is the Sri Ulagalanda Perumal Temple. An imprint of Mahabali’s head may be seen underneath Sri Ulagalantha Perumal’s Thiruvadi. When Mahabali asked to see Perumal in His “Aadhiseshan” form, Perumal obliged by appearing at this same temple. Next is the Sri Kamakshi temple, another Hindu holy site. There are three other Divya desams included inside this one: Thiruneeragam, Thirukaragam, and Thirukarvanam.

The Perumal points to the ground with His right index finger to indicate that He has calculated the height of the first step. The fact that He is able to measure the whole planet with only two fingers on his left hand is more proof of this. As the third and last requirement, He has King Mahabali kneel to Him and offer to have His skull used as a measuring stick.

Shri Trivikrama – Ulagalanda Perumal, the fifth avatar of Vishnu, is the focus of worship in this temple. In terms of temple towers, this one is among the largest at a whopping 192 feet. An essential portion of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham is the songs sung by the Alwars Poigai Alvar, Bhoothathalvar, and Peyalvar in honor of Lord Vishnu.

To defeat the demon ruler Mahabali, Vishnu assumed the form of Vamana, became vast in size, conquered the earth and the skies, and, when given Mahabali’s head as a place to lay his foot, sent the demon into the underworld. According to myth, Mrikandu Maharishi came here to pay homage to Vishnu in his incarnation as Trivikrama.

An impressive depiction of Ulagalanda Perumal (also known as Trivikrama) with his foot lifted and gazing east can be seen on the Moolavar. Taayaar is revered as Poonkoval Nachiyaar in this region, her traditional name. Aayanaar or Kovalan is the Utsavar in this case (Gopalan).
