The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is a zoo that is located in the town of Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal in India. It covers an area of 67.56 acres (27.3 ha) and is also known as the Darjeeling Zoo. The zoo first opened its doors in 1958 and currently sits at an average elevation of 2,134 metres (7,000 feet), making it India’s largest high altitude zoo.

It has effective captive breeding projects for endangered species like as the snow leopard, red panda, and Himalayan wolf, and it specialises in producing animals that are able to adapt to the circumstances of the alpine environment. Every year, there are approximately 300,000 people that make their way to the zoo. Padmaja Naidu (1900–1975), the daughter of Sarojini Naidu, is being honoured by having a park named after her. In addition to being a participant in the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the zoo acts as the nerve centre for the red panda programme that is run by the Central Zoo Authority of India.

History Of The Zoo

In order to research and preserve Himalayan biodiversity, the Department of Education of the Government of West Bengal created a zoo in the Birch Hill neighbourhood of Darjeeling on August 14, 1958. Dilip Kumar Dey was the company’s initial Director and creator. Mr. Dey, a member of the Indian Forest Service, was sent on deputation to the Department of Education to create a zoo that would focus mostly on Himalayan plants and animals at a high altitude.

Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev gifted a pair of Siberian (Ussuri) tigers to the Government of India in 1960, making them the park’s most famous residents. Conservation’s biggest personalities have been drawn to the HZP and made regular appearances there throughout the years. Snow leopards, red pandas, gorals (mountain goats), Siberian tigers, and other rare species and birds can now be seen at the zoo. There is, however, cause for fear that the Himalayan creatures may be in danger as a result of the region’s rising temperatures.

There was an agreement between the federal and state governments to split the cost of maintaining the park, and in January 1972, the park officially became a registered organisation. The park was given to the West Bengal Department of Forests in May of 1993. [6] In 1975, the then-Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, visited the park and formally renamed it in Padmaja Naidu’s honour.
