Nek Chand, a renowned artist, and Padmashree Award winner, created the only rock-cut garden in South India at Malampuzha Garden in the Palakkad district. Pieces of bangles, tiles, old plastic and metal containers, and other scraps were used to create the entire garden. The gardens also feature the enormous Malampuzha Yakshi (female vampire) created in 1969 by Kanayi Kunhiraman, a well-regarded sculptor from the state.

We are fortunate to still retain this magnificent piece of art history. The soaring ropeway and flower beds and fountains and rose gardens instantly calm the mind and spirit. Located in the foothills of the Western Ghats, Malampuzha is a picturesque town that is popular with tourists for its abundance of picnic sites and verdant scenery.

Kerala’s first large-scale irrigation project is Malampuzha. A dam spanning Malampuzha, a Bharathapuzha tributary, and a canal system irrigate 21,245 hectares. Gravity-masonry dam with an earthen saddle. Masonry is 1626.71 m and earthen is 222.20 m. The reservoir has a water-spread area of 22 sq. km and 226 mm3 capacity at Full Reservoir Level (FRL) + 115.06 m. Masonry dams can reach 38.10 m. (125 feet).

Two canal systems supply the dam’s 42,090-hectare reservoir. Palakkad Municipality and 6 neighboring panchayaths get drinking water from the reservoir while the canal systems irrigate farmland. If water is scarce in summer, the Irrigation Department lifts the dam shutters to refill Bharathappuzha’s water supply wells, supplying Parali, Mankara, Lakkidi, Ottapalam, Mannanur, Shornur, Ongallur, Pattambi, Thrithala, etc. All those with a passion for hiking will be able to enjoy the area’s excellent trekking paths. The largest crowds congregate in Malampuzha Gardens and the Irrigation Dam.

Not only are these locations great for a picnic, but they are also rich in history and lore.  Irrigation, drinking water, industry, electricity generation, fish farming, and water transportation were all originally envisioned as possible outcomes of the dam’s construction. Although water transportation was originally planned, those plans were scrapped early on, and recreational boating services were instead launched. The two districts of Palakkad and Malampuzha were incorporated into the newly established Kerala State not long after the dam’s opening.
