It is thought that the temple was first constructed under the Chola Empire in the 10th or 11th century. Under the reign of Tirumalai Nayakar (1623–59 CE), the temple was extended during his reign, and he was responsible for the construction of the temple’s walls, raja gopuram, and halls. During the years 1940–1950, Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar was responsible for the construction of the temple’s additional halls.
It is said that Ramanuja (1017–1137 CE), the proponent of the Vaishnadvaita school of thought, stopped at the temple on his route to Melkote from the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy shrine. The construction of the seven-tiered, 80-foot (24-meter) Eastern tower began in 2013, while the construction of the northern temple tower began in 1944. Throughout the year 2013, some of the older halls also underwent renovations.
