History Of Guindy National Park

Guindy Park was initially established as a wildlife reserve and at one time encompassed a total of 5 km of one of the few remaining vestiges of tropical dry rain forests along the Coromandel Coast. In the early 1670s, a garden area was cut out of the Guindy woodland, and Governor William Langhorne (1672–1678) erected a mansion that was known as the Guindy Lodge. These two developments contributed to the transformation of St. Thomas Mount into a wholesome location for relaxation and pleasure.

The remaining portion of the wooded land belonged to a citizen of the United Kingdom called Gilbert Rodericks. In 1821, the government paid Gilbert Rodericks £35,000 to acquire the remaining portion of the forest land. In 1910, a reserve forest was established on an area that initially included 505 hectares.

While it was thought that Chital (spotted deer) was probably brought into the park around 1945, it is now discovered that they previously existed in the park in the year 1900 together with other antelope during the term of the colonial Governor of Chennai Sir Arthur Havelock. Other antelope were also there at this time (1895-1900)
