Despite being decked out in a crown of matted hair, the silvery moon, strands of the holy rudraksha, and a glittering ‘thali’ (the nuptial necklace worn by a woman to signal she is married), Mathorubagan is armed with a club or Dhandaayudham. His back is to the west, thus he is looking west. This god wears a dhoti on the right and a saree on the left to symbolize that he or she is both Shiva and Shakti in one.

Thiruchengodu is one of the most important Shiva temples and is praised as “Kodimada Chenkundrur” in the Thevaram poems. Thiruchengodu Temple is located on a hilltop with a westerly orientation. Sengodu means “the hill looks red in hue,” which is how the name came to be. At 1900 feet above sea level is where you’ll find the temple dedicated to Arthanareeswarar in Tiruchengode.
One may either drive up the paved roads or walk up the 1250 stairs to the summit. Along the way, devotees may stop at one of the numerous mandapams for some much-needed downtime. As one reaches the top of the hill, their breath is taken away by the sight of the northward 5-tier Raja Gopuram. The 260 ft. east-west and 170 ft. north-south dimensions give you an idea of the expansiveness of the temple’s towering walls.
Three floors may be found in the western tower. To access the outer praaharam, enter the temple by the northern entrance and descend the 20 or so stairs (the walkway or passage). Here is supposedly where Goddess Shakti meditated upon Lord Shiva and was granted the privilege of incorporation into his body, according to the Puranas (Ardhanareeshwara). At the foot of the hill sits a Sri Kailashanathar shrine.

On the northern passageway, the shrine dedicated to Lord Muruga stands out. Muruga, who is also revered as Sengottu Velavar, is shown here with his back to the west as he gives his worshippers a magnificent darshan in the morning. Sengottu Velavar is worshipped on a daily basis at ucchikaalam (noon) with abhisheka and special offerings as part of the temple’s pooja.
The magnificence of this Muruga has been praised in a poem by the Tamizh poet Arunagirinathar in his works called Thiruppugazh. There is a belief that the goddess is leading the pooja. Abhishekam is conducted in a certain way at ecchi kalam. According to legend, Maha Vishnu, Adiseshan, and a plethora of other gods all paid homage to Shiva in Thirucchengodu.
The Design of the Arthanareeswarar Temple at Tiruchengode:
The temple is one of the best specimens of ancient Tamil sculpture, art, and architecture in existence today. The outer praaharam is most recognizable for its 30 granite pillars topped with sculptures of warriors on horses and yalis (mythical creatures that are half-lion and half-elephants, of immense power).
Many Veerabhadrar, Manmathan, Rathi, and Kali sculptures, among others, can be seen at the mandapam in front of the Sengottu Velavar sannidhi. In the same vein, they are also massive structures. On the roof of this mandapam, one can see intricate rock carvings of a lotus with its stalk bowed, parrots, chains, and chain links, all of which inspire amazement at the ingenuity, skill, and meticulousness with which they were created.
Incredible sculptures once again adorn the garbha graham or shrine of Lord Nageshwara. Along with the outside hallway, the mandapam that adjoins the sanctuary has carved pillars with sculptures of mounted warriors, called yalis. Hence, the Thirucchengodu Ardhanareeswarar temple has a wealth of historic exquisite art and sculpture that must be protected for future generations.
